Crazy 4 Cult II

August 25th, 2008

A gallery of images from the “Crazy 4 Cult” sequel show where artists pay tribute to their favorite cult films.

Brandon Bird’s offering is typically genius, but there’s a lot of other great and unexpected stuff in there. A little heavy on the Kevin Smith and Wizard of Oz, but there is a “Strange Brew” one in there so all’s right with the world.

Fantastic. My favorites are the Lundegaard family portrait, Heather with “War and Peace,” the Warriors scene with “clank the bottles,” and “Great Showdowns: The Princess Bride.” “Zissou Route” is doubly referential—right?

The “Deppictions” one reminds me of your old graphic for RRW.

Ha! Brandon is friend’s with my friend Jeff, who also has a piece in this show. His are the Schwarzeneggers.

Brandon Bird me gusta since the Law and Order Coloring Book.

What I failed to mention, though, is there’s a Harold & Maude portait of Harold lying in state that caught my eye and then I go back and read the credit and it’s Steve Purcell! I don’t know if it’s that Steve Purcell (former LucasArts artist and creator of Sam & Max which I was gaga over in high school) and the style/media is too different for me to make an Antiques-Roadshowish curatorial decision of its provenance. But if it is, score!

Also, those Total Recall faces are spot-on and hilarious. Total Recall needs to be more of a comedy touchstone… it’s a ridiculous film.
